Magnus Carlsen and Jan Nepomnjaschtschi also split in the second game of the Chess World Cup in Dubai after a complicated process.
“It was a crazy game.
I really didn't know what was going on.
At the board I thought that neither of us played particularly well, ”said Nepomnyashchi.
The challenger from Russia had a rook and pawn advantage over a knight with Black.
However, Carlsen's jumper was very well placed.
The defending champion sacrificed a pawn early on in a Catalan opening and received good piece play and attacking chances, while Nepomnyashchi described his position as "maybe playable, but ugly".
After the opening, Carlsen did not make the best of his possibilities, later it was Nepomnyashchi.
Carlsen called the draw achieved after 58 moves and four and a half hours "a decent result for both of them."
The third game starts on Sunday at 1.30 p.m., Monday is free.
The first game ended in a draw in 45 moves.
