Former world shot put champion CJ Hunter died two weeks before his 53rd birthday.
This was announced by the American Association of Throwing Trainers.
No information was given on the cause of death.
Hunter, who won the World Cup gold in Seville in 1999, gained notoriety aside from his own sporting achievements, especially as the husband of US scandal sprinter Marion Jones.
Jones had lost her five Olympic medals from Sydney 2000 (three gold, two bronze) because of her involvement in the Balco doping scandal and was later sent to prison for perjury.
Hunter, whose marriage to Jones divorced in 2002, was also incriminated in the Balco scandal.
After a positive doping test, he was excluded as an athlete from the 2000 Olympic Games, but was allowed to be present in the stadium in Sydney as his wife's coach.
Hunter ended his career afterwards.
