The Aline Schmitt affair is stirring up French judo, and now also Israeli.

The coach who was appointed to Shani Hershko's team just two weeks ago and was scheduled to land in Israel a few days ago was accused in his homeland of violently assaulting his partner, European champion Margo Pino, and his future in the country is in doubt.

Schmitt, a former Olympic athlete and bronze medalist at the World Championships, specializes in women's coaching, in recent years he coaches a French women's club and accompanies as a personal trainer many athletes, most notably world champion Madeleine Longa, the silver medalist from Tokyo weighing up to 78 kg. Pino, two-time European champion up to 70 kg (2019 and 2020), who even became his partner.

But just before taking off for Israel, Pino, who was a partner in the French team winning the gold medal in the mixed team competition in Tokyo, accused Schmitt of a violent attack on her. The court hearing the case released Schmitt from lack of evidence, but now the Israeli Judo Association will have to decide whether his appointment is morally correct.

The Israeli association will conduct an investigation into the matter with the French Judo Association, the European Judo Association and the World Judo Association, in the hope that the findings will allow him to eventually arrive in Israel. Judo Association chairman Moshe Ponti told Walla! Sports: "I will make the in-depth inquiry to wonder deeply about the coach's pitcher. We have received recommendations on him, we will thoroughly examine all the details and make a decision."

Today Pino was interviewed by the French "La Parisien" following the affair and said: "I was close to death. He was under the influence of alcohol. He was supposed to come to my house so I could take him to the airport for a flight to Israel. A few minutes after he arrived, he explained he would not have to "He took his things. I was surprised and asked him what he was doing. He replied that I was stupid and used more violent words."

At a hearing for Shemit on Tuesday, it was alleged that he grabbed Pino's hair and threw it to the floor, before hitting her in the face.

"He used to belittle me," Pino added, "he would say insulting things about my personality and behavior. There have also been two violent incidents in the last two years, but he has never hit my face. He broke things in my apartment, there was a big argument but no beatings."
