Two rooms, two atmospheres.
Uncompromising on the European scene, Olympique Lyonnais is disappointing in Ligue 1. Defeated at Groupama Stadium by Stade de Reims (1-2), the Gones are struggling to return to the leading teams and point to a little and brilliant tenth place.
Arrived with great fanfare this summer, Peter Bosz does not manage to pull out of the game on the Lyon bench.
Ligue 1 fixtures and results
League 1 standings
No winning formula in Ligue 1
Tenth in Ligue 1, six places on the podium, Lyon is not in line with its objectives, despite their late match against Olympique de Marseille. Against Reims, the Gones conceded their fifth defeat in fifteen league days, a loss every three matches. Compared to the previous year, the charges of Peter Bosz have collected eight points less at the same stage of the competition.
A disappointment facing the fourteenth in Ligue 1 which raises many questions about the shortcomings of OL and their coach. After the meeting, the former Ajax Amsterdam technician did not hide his disappointment. “
It was very bad. We don't deserve to win, you have to be honest. From the start of the match, it was not good. We didn't play well although we had a few chances. We didn't give much to Reims either. It was not a good OL. It's a difficult time for us.
Irregular, both in content and in terms of results, Lyon does not display the face of a contender ready to fight for the podium.
A lack of consistency, which Houssem Aouar pointed out after the defeat against Reims: “
It is difficult to be consistent, we are in our place in the league.
We will get back to work to erase what has not been good.
It is up to us to remain united.
In the game, Lyon alternates between hot and cold.
Interesting possession streaks, but a lack of offensive edge, and a worrying fragility defensively that did not allow the Gones to appear higher in the standings.
Defense at bay
Against the Rémois, the defensive weaknesses of OL were once again exposed.
With 23 goals conceded, Lyon is the fourteenth defense in the championship.
A crumbly rearguard which has the annoying habit of collapsing when the level of adversity increases, like the rout in Rennes (4-1).
Symbol of a sector of play in real difficulty, the Lyon defense kept its clean sheet only three times in Ligue 1. In a closely related way, the Gones often sabotage the work on the defensive level, in the last moments of a meeting.
Against Nice, a direct competitor for European places, Lyon led (0-2) before completely cracking, conceding three goals in the space of fifteen minutes.
A defensive fragility, and mental flaws which have a major influence on the dynamics of Lyon, and which strongly denote with their performances in the European Cup.
The Europa League, a goal?
In the Europa League, Peter Bosz's men have given themselves a walk in the park.
In a group largely within their reach, the Lyonnais took place.
First with five wins in as many games, the Gones easily secured their ticket to the round of 16 of the competition.
Best attack in the Europa League with fifteen achievements, the Rhone club made the show on the European scene.
With only four goals conceded, Lyon shows much more solidity.
A performance to be qualified, facing extremely tough opponents.
But the confidence gained in this competition could give ideas to Peter Bosz and his troops.
Even if the championship is still long, and that Lyon is not yet completely behind the podium, the Europa League could eventually become a credible option to thrill the supporters and obtain a qualification for the most prestigious of European competitions.
