Gladbach conceded six goals in one half: "Sorry, what shit is going on right now"

For decades, the name Borussia Mönchengladbach has been associated with the highest victory in Bundesliga history.

The club once won 12-0 against Borussia Dortmund, that was in 1978, Berti Vogts cleared the back, star striker Jupp Heynckes scored five times in the front, and in the 38th minute Gladbach led 6-0 against overwhelmed Dortmund.

On Sunday it only took until the 37th minute before it was 6-0.

Or better 0: 6, from Gladbach's point of view.

Borussia experienced a memorable defeat in their home game against SC Freiburg.

It was the highest half-time lead of a team since that 12-0 success of Gladbach against BVB in April 1978. According to Sportschau.de, a team scored six goals in its own stadium in 1964 (Dortmund at FC Schalke).

"Why don't we fight back?"

"Sorry, what shit is going on right now," said Gladbach's sports director Max Eberl after the game about what had previously happened on the pitch: "Why don't we fight back?"

The six hits showed a certain similarity.

• The 1-0 falls after 83 seconds.

  Not really a position from which goals arise.

  But Vincenzo Grifo's wide cross is extended in front of goal, again several Gladbachers lose out to fight for the ball (24th).

• The 37th minute, you guessed it: A free-kick flank from the right side, a won header duel - 0: 6.

“Every shot on goal was possible today.

I've never experienced anything like it, ”said Freiburg coach Christian Streich after the game.

That was not entirely true, the Freiburg team shot 13 times, seven attempts brought them on goal.

Defender Nico Schlotterbeck, who scored the sixth goal, called the first half "a bit surreal".

As for the result, that's not so wrong at all.

At least the 6-0 break at break was an unlikely result.

If it goes according to the Expected Goals metric from understat.com, around three goals would have been expected from the Freiburg chances.

The model calculates how likely it is to score a goal from a certain point on the field.

If you add up all the SC deals, you end up with an expected goals value of 2.71.

Borussia achieved a value above 1.08.

Accordingly, Freiburg was significantly more dangerous than Gladbach.

The 0: 6, however, seems more violent than the 90 minutes gave.

A change of coach?

The question is "downright absurd"

The Gladbach crisis is reinforced by the fact that the derby against Cologne was lost 4-1 in the previous week.

With 18 points from 14 games, the team is 13th in the table, but actually wanted to play for the European Cup with the new coach Adi Hütter.

That is what the SC does instead, who is fourth with 25 points.

When asked, Gladbach's sports director Eberl called a change of coach "downright absurd." He had signed Hütter in the summer for 7.5 million euros from Eintracht Frankfurt as the successor to Marco Rose, who had moved to Borussia Dortmund.

"It can't be that we have to answer such questions after two games," said Eberl.

And coach Hütter?

According to the circumstances, he looked relaxed in the evening.

"Emotional outbursts don't do anything," he said. "I had the feeling that we were in a state of shock." The morning after the bankruptcy, he also announced one-on-one meetings with his players.

It is likely that the training will also be about standards in the coming days.

But that doesn't mean that dormant balls won't be a problem on the upcoming matchday.

Because Freiburg's strength in this area was already an issue, said Hütter.

That is why they trained to defend standards in a targeted manner.
