The European Rugby Cup, the first day of which will take place this weekend, is already impacted by the Covid.

The Welsh Scarlets squad, of which 32 players and staff are in quarantine under anti-Covid measures, have withdrawn from their European Rugby Cup match, scheduled for Saturday in Bristol, announced on Tuesday. EPCR.

The Scarlets will not come out until Friday from the isolation where they were placed after returning from a match in South Africa, put by the United Kingdom on its red list after the discovery of the new variant of Covid-19, called Omicron.

They explained their choice by "concerns about the health of the players and their inability to field a competitive team" after two weeks without training, writes the EPCR, organizer of the competition.

“This Pool B match is therefore canceled and the Bristol Bears considered winners by a score of 28-0 with five classification points awarded, in accordance with the Tournament Rules,” he adds.

The Welsh team had been placed in solitary confinement for ten days on their return from South Africa, where they had participated in the sixth day of the United Rugby Championship, the championship which brings together Scottish, Welsh, Italian, Irish and South Africans.

No positive test

The emergence of the Omicron variant, deemed “worrying” by the WHO, has led to a hardening of travel conditions between South Africa and the United Kingdom, where the variant has meanwhile been discovered.

Although there were no positive tests at the Scarlets - unlike Cardiff, which is also due to face Toulouse on Saturday, or defending champion Munster - Llanelli's side had to agree to stay for 10 days in a hotel in Belfast, where she will not be released until Friday.

The players have not been able to train for two weeks, contenting themselves with individual exercises in their rooms or in the parking lot.

"The EPCR is well aware that the regrettable events of the last few weeks have had an impact on the players and the staff of the Scarlets, without them being responsible for it", still writes the institution, but the already very dense calendar does not allow no postponing matches.
