The world number one has always left doubts about his vaccination against Covid-19, mandatory except for rare exceptions for dispute

It's a further step towards his presence at the first Grand Slam tournament of the season.

World number one Novak Djokovic, whose participation was uncertain due to doubts surrounding his possible vaccination against Covid, appears on the list of participants in the next Australian Open on Wednesday, unlike Serena Williams.

The Serbian, winner of 20 Grand Slam tournaments, had cast doubt on his participation in the Australian Open next January, refusing to say if he was vaccinated, when he must be to enter the country.

Serena Williams was supposed to play, but the American's name is not on the list.

Already Tuesday, the name of Djokovic appeared among those of the players who will defend the colors of Serbia for the ATP Cup, the competition between ATP nations, organized in early January in Sydney.

The opportunity to become the first tennis player to have more than 20 Grand Slam titles

Winner of three of the four Majors last season and nine Australian Open titles, Djokovic would become the first tennis player to win 21 Grand Slam titles if he wins in Melbourne.

But the 34-year-old Serb, refractory to vaccination, refuses to say if he is vaccinated against Covid-19, an obligation to participate in the Melbourne Major.

His father Srdjan had recently said on Serbian television that "Nole" would "probably not" go, denouncing a "blackmail" by the organizers.

The latter, before the revelation of the players who should participate in the tournament, once again confirmed that all players, their entourage and members of their management should be vaccinated to participate in the Open.

"Any request for exemption will have to follow the strict requirements of the government", also added the Australian federation.

Roger Federer absent, Serena Williams too diminished to participate

Among the players announced against Djokovic is Rafael Nadal, also in search of a 21st Grand Slam title, but not Roger Federer.

Also holder of 20 crowns in Grand Slam, the Swiss had already announced that he would not take part in the tournament.

On the women's side, world No.1 Ashleigh Barty will try to be the first Australian to win at home in 44 years, and will have to count in particular on the presence of the Japanese star Naomi Osaka, but also of all the members of the Top 20 global.

On the other hand, Serena Williams, in search of a 24th Grand Slam title that would allow her to equal Margaret Court's record, will not be in Melbourne in January.

The 40-year-old American explained that she had given up following the advice of her medical staff.

"It's not an easy decision to make, but I'm not where I should be physically," she said, quoted in a statement from the organizers.

“Melbourne is one of my favorite cities to visit, and every year I look forward to competing in the Australian Open.

I will miss the fans but I am excited to come back and play at my best, ”added the seven-time Australian Open winner.
