Chelsea FC missed group victory in the preliminary round of the Champions League.

The defending champion only scored 3: 3 (1: 2) at Zenit Saint Petersburg and therefore dropped from first to second place.

The beneficiary is Juventus, who defeated Malmö 1-0 (1-0) in the parallel game in Group H at home.

The decision was made in stoppage time. Chelsea were still 3-2 ahead, then Zenits Magomed Ozdoev shot from the edge of the box and overcame goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. For the Russian champions, the hit didn't change anything in terms of table. Zenit finished the group stage in third place and continued in the Europa League.

Up to Ozdoev's goal, the outstanding man of the game was Timo Werner.

After a corner he pushed an extension of Andreas Christensen's header over the goal line from close range, only 83 seconds had passed, it was the fastest Champions League goal in Chelsea's history.

Werner later put on for strike partner Romelu Lukaku (62nd minute), shortly before the end he scored the supposed winning goal (85th), before Ozdoev finally got a free shot (90th + 4).

Claudinho (38.) and Sardar Azmoun (41.) had previously scored the goals for Zenit.

Juventus had defeated Malmö thanks to a goal from Moise Kean (18th).

Up until this last day of the match, Chelsea and Juve had left points against each other.
