The big derby of the Spanish capital will be held tonight (Sunday) for the first time this season, when Real Madrid will host Atletico Madrid in about an hour in the 17th round of the league. The Blancos lead the table by 10 points from city rivals, who are ranked fourth with one game less and know that tonight’s loss will significantly hurt their chances of defending the championship title.
Real are in tremendous momentum and have not lost for more than two months, standing on a streak of nine wins and recording 11 in total in their last 12 games in all competitions, including the 0-2 draw at Inter that lifted them to the Champions League quarter-finals from first place at home. Whoever was chosen by Carlo Ancelotti to fill the right wing of tonight's attack alongside the hot Vinicius and Karim Benzema, is Marco Asensio who was preferred over Rodrigo.
The champion also arrives in a good mood, having managed to grab a place in the last eight of the Champions League with an away win over Porto last week, but Luis Suarez was injured in that game and therefore not in the squad tonight, when he will likely not get minutes off the bench either.
Antoine Griezmann and Mathews Konya have launched an attack for Diego Simeone, who hopes to win a league derby for the first time since February 2016.
