Formula 1 fears damage to its image: Fia wants to clarify the World Cup final

Was the World Cup decided by a spontaneous rule change? Irregularities during the last safety car phase in Abu Dhabi caused criticism of the race management. The incident should now be discussed with the teams.

After the controversial Formula 1 final in Abu Dhabi, the world motor sport association Fia has announced a clarification.

Meaningful conclusions should be available before the start of the coming season.

As the Fia announced on Wednesday in Paris, a "detailed analysis and clarification for the future with all relevant parties should now take place".

The incident is to be discussed with all teams and drivers "in order to learn from this situation and to provide participants, media and fans with clarity about the current regulations," it said after the World Council meeting.

The debate about the outcome of the last race of the season would "currently damage the image of the championship".

Mercedes filed two protests immediately after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday, both of which were dismissed.

The Silver Arrows have until Thursday to appeal.

Mercedes criticizes the processes surrounding the last controversial safety car phase: Initially, the race management had communicated that the lapped cars - five of which were between the World Cup competitors at the time - should not overtake the safety car.

This decision was then reversed.

On the last lap, Red Bull Mercedes driver Max Verstappen overtook Lewis Hamilton and won the World Cup for the first time.
