A good one and a half years after his handbike accident with severe head injuries, the former Formula 1 driver Alessandro Zanardi left the clinic.
"Alex is at home now," said Zanardi's wife Daniela on the BMW website.
The 55-year-old Zanardi is a brand ambassador for the German automobile manufacturer.
Serious head and face injuries
Zanard lost control of his handbike in Tuscany on June 19, 2020.
He collided with a truck and suffered severe head and face injuries.
After that, the Italian had to undergo several operations and fought for his life for a long time.
In November 2020, after a slight improvement, he was taken to a hospital in Veneto for further rehabilitation to be closer to his family.
Zanardi's wife's step in public was apparently a sign to his fans: Look, he's fine.
The Italian has probably not really recovered yet: "We have waited a long time and are very happy, even if further stays in special clinics for rehabilitation therapy will be necessary for him," explained Daniela Zanardi.
The "warmth of his family" is important for his recovery.
Former Formula 1 driver Zanardi lost both legs in a racing accident at the Lausitzring in 2001.
He later got into cycling and won the Paralympics four times in a handbike.
