After a serious accident during a league game, a young Frankfurt ice hockey player died of his head injuries.
The 18-year-old Niclas Kaus from the U20 team of the Löwen Frankfurt fell so unhappily against the gang last Saturday during a game in the DNL III youth division against Bad Nauheim that he sustained severe head injuries.
Despite intensive medical care in the hospital, the defender finally died on Wednesday.
This was announced by the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) and its club on the day before Christmas Eve.
Dismay in the German ice hockey scene
The case caused great consternation in the ice hockey scene.
The DEB top and national coach Toni Söderholm, as well as many professionals and clubs in the German Ice Hockey League, quickly expressed their condolences on social media.
A minute's silence has been announced for all professional games in Germany over the Christmas period.
The Löwen Frankfurt announced that they would like to let the youngsters' sports activities rest until further notice.
For the teammates, the coaching team and the supervisors of the U20 team, the club has "taken care of professional help," it says in a message from the club.
The brother of the deceased player is also part of the U20 team.
Niclas Kaus started ice hockey with the Löwen when he was six.
