After crowd riots at the cup match between Olympique Lyon and second division club FC Paris, the French football association excluded both clubs from the Coupe de France.
The game of December 17th will be counted as lost for both clubs, which means that both teams will be eliminated from the current competition.
That was decided by the disciplinary department of the football association on Monday afternoon.
FC Paris is not allowed to use its own Charléty stadium for the next five home games and has to pay a fine of 10,000 euros. Olympique Lyon fans will be banned from the stands at outside stadiums until the end of the 2021/2022 season. The club has to pay a fine of 52,000 euros and was excluded from the Coupe de France in the coming season - albeit on probation. The penalty applies if a game has to be definitely abandoned again due to rioting Lyon fans.
The game between the two clubs was only interrupted for around 50 minutes shortly after the start of the second half and then not restarted.
The reason for this was fan riots in the stands.
Pyrotechnics were ignited, there were fights.
Numerous spectators stormed the square to get to safety.
The riots followed a day after the French government unveiled a plan of action to ban fan violence from stadiums.
Since August, cases of fan violence have been increasing in Ligue 1 games in France, some supporters stormed onto the field and there were injuries.
So far, sanctions for the clubs involved have not brought about any fundamental change.
