Will anyone remember the Paralympic athletes in 2022 as well? | Israel today

2021-12-29T06:34:05.985Z

Next year there will be no Olympics and there will be no media anthem - and everyone will probably forget the superheroes who won six gold medals in Tokyo

Okay, so let's start with the unfortunate answer to the question in the title: unequivocally no.

This is how it is in the State of Israel.

"Hope" was heard six times on the podium at the Tokyo 202 Olympics. Ami Daddown (two gold and one silver), Mark Millier (two gold and one bronze) and Iyad Shelby (two gold) put Israel on the map and politicians on the phone.

In 2022 there will be no Olympics, there will be no media anthem, and Paralympic athletes will continue to look for sponsors to fund their activities.

Until a few years ago, the great coach Jacob Binanson worked full time.

How exactly should a coach, who does sacred work in rehabilitating the disabled and turning them into Paralympic athletes, exist if he is volunteering?

Would any of the politicians who called to congratulate him after winning Olympic medals have agreed to warm up his chair in the Knesset of Israel without pay?

But Bininson will try to continue to sustain these super athletes, keep them fit, professional, and all when he knows the next time his name is mentioned will be in Paris 2024.

It's a terrible feeling to know that someone remembers you once every four years.

One moment you're at the top of the world, and then you have to climb to that top again for years, with no ability to touch the edge - until you reach the Olympics again.

In a country without a sports culture, it is difficult to maintain professional frameworks, especially when it comes to the disabled, because every other day of the year they are - unfortunately - more transparent than nylon or glass.

This is a sad reality, but it will change in 2024, subject to the medals and interests of politicians.

Were we wrong?

Fixed!
