Audience attendance at Spanish league games will be reduced to 75% after the Spanish government placed new restrictions on sporting events against the backdrop of increasing cases of the omicron strain in general and the corona in general.
The new update in the La Liga stands will take effect on January 1 with the aim of slowing the spread and the measures will be reviewed again at the end of January.
The new restrictions come after the number of cases in Spain reached an all-time high earlier this week, with nearly 100,000 cases reported within a 24-hour period on Tuesday.
However, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez insists the high vaccination rate in the country (about 80% of the population) will reduce the number of people in need of treatment.
"Obviously we are going to see high numbers of infections, but not hospitalizations and intensive care hospitalizations compared to previous waves," he told reporters.
The league clubs themselves are facing the big spread in the country as the Spanish league returns this weekend after a short winter break.
Barcelona announced 10 players were found positive for the virus this week, while Real Madrid confirmed four more cases on Wednesday after dealing with an outbreak before Christmas.
Rayo Vallecano, meanwhile, claims that the team's 17 players are suffering from the corona virus, with Real Sociedad also confirming ten cases.
League captains have ruled that games must take place if clubs are to form a squad of 14 players.
