Will one of the nine Germans around Geiger and Eisenbichler jump on the podium?

Garmisch-Partenkirchen - The opening competition in Oberstdorf last Wednesday, the DSV-Adler had imagined a little different.

Geiger ultimately missed the podium despite first place in the qualification and finished fifth, Eisenbichler even only seventh.

The winner was Ryoyu Kobayashi from Japan, closely followed by three Norwegians.

Eisenbichler took the first step on the last day of the year when he ousted the competition in qualifying with his 137-meter jump. The overall leader Kobayashi was a wafer-thin second, Karl Geiger at least landed third. After his successful jump, the Siegsdorf qualification winner announced that he would go to bed early despite the festivities on New Year's Eve. "I'm not there to party, but to exercise my passion," said the 30-year-old federal police officer.

The German duo is looking forward to jumping and would like to end the 20 year long dry spell of the DSV.

In 2002, Sven Hannawald was the last German to win the Four Hills Tournament.

“That would be nice if one of us could do it.

I just look at myself and keep my fingers crossed for Karl that he's still doing well, ”said Eisenbichler.

His friend and team-mate Geiger knows the Great Olympic Hill on the Zugspitze very well. “We have had many courses here and also good courses. I got along well in the summer too, and that has now continued, ”said the 28-year-old from Oberstdorf, who is again starting in the yellow jersey of the overall World Cup leader. His statistics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen are also not the worst, since 2016 there have been four podium places in six competitions.

In addition to Eisenbichler and Geiger, other German ski jumpers qualified.

Stephan Leyhe (Willingen) survived the preliminary runs as ninth, Severin Freund (Rastbüchl) landed on 17th place.

Also there are Constantin Schmid (Oberaudorf, 20th place), Pius Paschke (Kiefersfelden, 29th place), Justin Lisso (Schmiedefeld, 40th) and Felix Hoffmann (Goldlauter, 45th).

The Ruhpolding Olympic champion Andreas Wellinger also made it into the finals in 47th place.
