What is the difference between a top team and a team from the lower middle of the table?

There are, of course, various, but in tight games one thing stands out above all: taking advantage of mistakes.

This is exactly what gave the Eisbären Regensburg a 3-0 victory on Sunday evening in a high-class game of the ice hockey Oberliga Süd at SC Riessersee.

Because the hosts were by no means worse than the third in the ranking.

Two teams with open sights

At the beginning, however, the SCR hardly ever got the target on the racket. Regensburg performed in the style of a top team: dominant, passable, controlled and powerful. The whites and blues didn't like that, but they survived the initial phase without damage and slowly found their way into the game. From then on, the top-class duel developed as both teams acted with open sights - full throttle forward. The great opportunities remained in short supply for a long time, because the defensives were also on their guard and always there at the crucial moment. It was not until minute 15 that the hosts had the scream on their lips for the first time. But because after Filip Hadamczik Moritz Israel's dream pass failed to stand alone against Regensburg's goalie Peter Holmgren, they quickly fell silent again. Seconds before the end of the third, all SCR supporters held their breath.A ricochet flew into the air, landed on the bar of the hosts, performed a little dance on her, but then fell to the left of the gate.

Simon Mayr's critical mistake

The first minutes in the second section were the mirror image of the first: Riessersee dominated, kept settling in the opposing third, but still missed the lead.

And then the SCR made the crucial mistake: Simon Mayr played the puck straight into Constantin Ontl's feet.

Goalie Michael Boehm stabbed the glass, but Erik Keresztury then sank from the back room.

Holmgren strong, SCR too imprecise

Afterwards, both teams fought openly again, Boehm and Holmgren had to do a lot of work. The hosts weakened themselves a little, Christoph Eckl had to go to the penalty box for five minutes. But SCR coach Pat Cortina was able to state after the end of the game: “Our outnumbered game was very good.” It remained just behind. On the other hand, there was a lack of excess again. The Garmisch-Partenkirchner acted better in five-on-five. Boehm was almost unemployed until the 55th minute, while Holmgren was under constant fire. The Riesserseer always presented the guests with new problems, sometimes tried bridging the neutral third quickly by consistently pursuing deep passes, sometimes they combined from back to front. But again and again the terminus was called Holmgren.The Regensburg goalie certainly made a strong game and received special praise from the polar bears' sports director, Stefan Schnabel - “Holmi was brutal” - but the white-blue team also played a large part in his shutout. In the end, they simply lacked precision, too often the shot was sought from an acute angle, too often they placed their attempts too centered.

And so it happened, as it had to: Regensburg was actually only occupied with defensive work, but then came dangerously in front of the goal and made the decision right away.

The host's heads bowed, belief in the surprise was gone.

And so they conceded the 0: 3 in excess.

What is left after a game like that?

This performance should still give the SCR self-confidence, because against 80 percent of the league competition you would certainly get three points with such a performance.

Cortina has also realized this: “If you look back three weeks, we have made a big step.” But at the same time the coach acts as a warning: “The team has great faith, but we haven't achieved anything.
