The Minister of Sports from the neighboring country unveiled the Egyptian plan to nominate candidates for the first ever Olympics in the African continent

Egyptian Sports Minister Ashraf Subhi has revealed that Egypt is planning to submit a bid to host the 2036 Olympics, and will seek to become the first African nation to host the world’s largest sporting event.

Subhi told an Arab Sky News newspaper that Egypt was due to enter the Olympic arena by submitting a formal application to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The Egyptian minister also confirmed that the Egyptian authorities are "currently working on the preparation of a proper and comprehensive application file that will be submitted along with the application to the IOC.

The president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, has previously spoken of his determination to see African countries submit a proper and respectable offer to host the Games, as it remains the only populated continent that did not host the event.

Subhi confirmed that there was a recent meeting with the President of the African National Olympic Committees, Mustafa Bruff, and claimed that the latter had confirmed that the African Federation was keen to do so and would support Egypt in its candidacy to host the 2036 Olympic Games.

Work is currently underway to build a multi-million dollar multidisciplinary sports complex, to be called "Egypt's International Olympic City", in the new administrative capital located 45 kilometers east of Cairo.

The project is expected to include a 90,000-seat stadium, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a complex of tennis courts and a multi-branch indoor hall.

Subhi believes the new development will boost Egypt's ambitions, but acknowledged that officials will still assess the technical, logistical and financial aspects before submitting a formal application to the International Olympic Committee, according to Sky News Arabia.

Similar to Egypt, officials in India, Russia, Spain, Turkey and Ukraine have expressed interest in submitting a bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.

The South African city of Cape Town was the last African city to compete in hosting the Olympic Games, but lost to Athens, the capital of Greece in the 2004 Games, finishing third out of five cities competing in the 1997 campaign. A bid was submitted by no country on the continent.

Senegal is set to become the first African country to host the 2026 Youth Olympics in Dakar.

The games that were supposed to take place in 2022 were postponed by four years because of the corona plague that caused the postponement of the Tokyo Games from 2020 to 2021.

In a conversation with young reporters representing the International Sports Press Association in November, Bach spoke about the importance of holding the Olympic Games in Africa in the future.

"At the beginning of my term (in 2013, ABB) I had a dream that the Olympics would be held in Africa during my tenure, but unfortunately that would not be possible," Bach said, as reported in the Nigerian Premium Times.

Bach added: "I hope that by 2036 or 2040 - that will be when I will no longer be in office - an African country will have a real dialogue with the International Committee to host the Olympic Games. It is very important to host the Games in Africa, but the ball is currently in the field of African countries." .

Egypt has sent delegations that have participated in 23 editions of the Summer Olympics since their debut in Stockholm in 1912, winning eight gold, 11 silver and 19 bronze medals.

Egypt boycotted the Games in 1932 and 1980.

The 2036 Olympics is set to be the second edition of the Summer Games awarded as part of the renewed process of the International Olympic Committee, according to which the future hosting committee is in a focused dialogue with selected countries.

For the 2032 Games, the committee recommended Brisbane as the preferred host, and this was approved by the management of the International Olympic Committee in its seat, after Brisbane was in fact the only potential host brought before the committee in the campaign.
