Preparations by senior Taekwondo fighters in Israel were due to go into final gear ahead of their participation in the World Championships in China in three months' time. The event in light of the developments of the corona plague in the world.
Following this decision, the event that was supposed to take place in April this year was postponed and will probably take place in the last quarter of 2022. The decision was approved today by the president of the International Taekwondo Association, Chungwon Cho who hosted an international congress attended by continental association presidents.
Cho noted that the new city that will host the flagship event of the International Federation will be announced soon, and that the event is expected to take place around the month of November.
Ten countries have already expressed willingness to host the event.
"Due to the ongoing epidemic, and for the health and well-being of athletes, officials and organizers, the Taekwondo World Championships are expected to take place in the last quarter of 2022," the official statement from the International Federation said.
It was also written that "upon completion of the process of selecting the host country by the association's management, a notice will be issued regarding the host city and the championship dates."
In a letter sent on behalf of the International Association of Wuxi City Leaders, to the heads of the organizing committee and the Chinese Taekwondo Association, Chu asked "to thank all parties for the excellent preparations despite the challenging conditions. We look forward to returning the championship host to Wuxi City in the near future."
The World Championship was originally scheduled to take place in Wuxi from October 12 to 18, 2021, before being moved to April 2022 due to developments in the corona plague.
"We recognize that in light of the uncertainty surrounding the epidemic, great flexibility will be required this year, with the protection of the health and well-being of the taekwondo family always remaining a top priority," it said.
The championship was originally scheduled to take place in May 2021, however they were postponed due to the proximity to the Tokyo 2020 Games which were also postponed to 2021.
Authorities in China have chosen to cancel dozens of sporting events during the epidemic, though the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing are expected to open in the Chinese capital next month and end in March.
It should be noted that the last World Taekwondo Championship was held in Manchester, England in May 2019.
