The fuel that drives Sarjan's son: Djokovic dreams of revenge

Another athlete might have been offended by the humiliating treatment and fled Australia, but Novak Djokovic is waiting at the hotel for an appeal with special motivation: just let me play, and show the bastards they can not stop me.

This is how it is when your father is sure that you are the "Son of God"

Australian Championship Final Summary: Novak Djokovic vs. Dominic Tim (Courtesy of Elhakom Eurosport PR)

The things that Sergeant Djokovic said this week about the affair in Australia were also exceptional in his standards.

Far beyond the usual brawl of Father Djokovic, known for his hostility to the West - this time it was really a burning hatred, a sense of victimhood and a distorted view of the world.

One can criticize the conduct of the authorities in Australia in the affair, but from the father's reaction one can learn much about the way the Djokovics see and experience reality: they are persecuted, everything is personal, Novak is the messenger of God.

After Sarjan claimed that "Novak was treated like a criminal" and that "he was held captive," he compared his son to the Christian Jesus, the Son of God. "They crucified Jesus on the cross, but he is still alive and well among us," said Mr. Djokovic, "now they are trying to crucify Novak and break him, to bring him down on his knees." He called the officials at the airport in Australia "idiots". He described the decision to detain his son as a "political attack". He called on the Serbs to "revolt" while the Western world tried to "humiliate" the "hero of our people". He said, "They could have told him 'do not come here Novak', and that was fine, but no, they wanted to humiliate him and imprison him… he is not in solitary confinement, he is in prison. Serbia's pride is imprisoned."

Before that, he compared his son to Spartacus, the mythological gladiator, the slave leader.

"Tonight they throw him into the dungeon, tomorrow they can already tie him in chains," he said, "but the truth is like water, and water always flows and finds its way and flows. Novak is the spartacus of the new world, unwilling to tolerate injustice, colonialism and hypocrisy. Novak He is their representative on the earth of the poor and oppressed. "

For him this is a planned malice, and their goal is to "humiliate the Serbian people and step on our hero."

Novak Djokovic is "humiliated and ridiculed" in Australia, and it "could turn ugly"

To some extent, Father Djokovic is right. The affair really revealed failures in the conduct of the bodies in Australia. Novak was misled. On the one hand, there was the sporting pressure of tournament director Craig Tilly, who of course wanted to see the champion break the historic Grand Slam record in Melbourne, claiming to have received approvals from the Victoria State Medical Committee. On the other hand, the Victoria government denies the allegations and publishes letters warning it of missiles. Beside it is the Australian government, which refuses personal relief to an international star, when it is under public pressure in a corona-stricken country. At the gate stood immigration officials at the airport, who operate according to strict and clear rules. And in the middle is stuck Djokovic, who just wants to win.

The attitude is really outrageous, disrespectful. Djokovic received clarifications from the heads of the tournament. He was told he had received an unusual permit to enter. Even people around him who are less extreme than his father claim he would not have come to Australia if he had known that the issue was still open and that such a commotion would arise. He was detained and sent to a small hotel on the outskirts of the city alongside refugees. Yesterday another player who entered the country with the same permit, the Czech Renata Vorkova, was also sent to the same Djokovic hotel, but only after she had already participated in a preparatory tournament (when it is not clear how and why she actually managed to enter and get a permit). Public pressure is mounting. Nick Kirius, also known as Djokovic's Chilba, also mentioned how in the past the Serb had tried to help Australia and raised money during the big fires and said that "we must behave differently".

The question is how right Sarjan is, and how personal it really is. The Australian mother - who has been battling corona since the beginning of the epidemic, closing borders and imposing long closures - is now taking revenge on Djokovic for his contempt for the virus (when he previously organized a showcase tournament that turned into a contagion party) and his principled refusal to get vaccinated. Last week Djokovic was proud of the confirmation he received and posted on Instagram that he was on his way, and in Melbourne, where 50,000 new infections were registered yesterday, this was perceived as a defiance. The vast majority agrees with what Raphael Nadal said: "It is your right not to be vaccinated, but you knew what the consequences were."

Djokovic has always evoked an ambivalent attitude.

On the one hand, it is impossible to argue with his greatness as an athlete, there is no point in mentioning again the dozens of times he has stunned tennis fans, and will soon officially become the greatest of all time.

On the other hand, his character has always been controversial.

The incident in which he hit a line judge was just a bonus.

He was never a crowd favorite.

Nadal and Federer were always preferred over him.

He has been accused of deceptive tactics, such as delaying play, falsifying injuries and taking medical time-outs to stop his opponents.

The feeling is that many enjoy hurting him, stopping him.

As if he needs it, but now he has a special motivation from Novak (Photo: Reuters)

Usually he knew how to take advantage of the hostility towards him, and channel the energies in his favor. The Serbian boy, who grew up in a home where the father preaches about the haughty and evil West - enjoys winning in London, Paris and New York. It just put more motivation in him. He never complained about the treatment he received from the audience, because he knew it would not be well received, but it was obvious that it was bothering him. In the last final in the United States, where he could have broken the Grand Slam record, the New York crowd hoped to watch a historic event and supported Djokovic against Medvedev (one of the few in the round who is even less popular than Novak). Djokovic shed tears of excitement. Even the bad boy needs love.

But now he is returning to his natural state, preventing anger.

Another athlete might have been offended and given up.

Someone else might have said to himself, 'Let those Australians go to hell, get stuck with Zebra and Medvedev, I'll not be back here', but not Sarjan's son.

He fights for higher goals.

He is Jesus, he is Spartacus, he is the representative on earth of the poor and oppressed, he is the humiliated hero of the Serbian nation.

So he is now sitting in his little room in the hotel, eating what is served to him, not practicing, just waiting for an appeal on Monday, and planning the revenge.

Just let him play, get on the field, and at the end you will bow again.
