The 400-meter sprinter Deon Lendore from Trinidad and Tobago died at the age of 29.
The World Athletics Federation confirmed this on Tuesday.
According to a report by the British Guardian, Lendore, who won bronze in the 4x400 meter relay in London in 2012 and was runner-up in 2015, was killed in a car accident in Texas.
Lendore took part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio and most recently in Tokyo, where he made it to the 400-meter semifinals and finished eighth.
With the season he reached the finals in Japan.
His greatest success, however, was perhaps the runner-up world title over 4 x 400 meters with the 2015 relay in Beijing, when the team from Trinidad and Tobago spectacularly left the favorites from Jamaica and Great Britain behind and only had to admit defeat to the USA.
"Words cannot adequately express our grief over the devastating and premature loss," said a statement from the Olympic Committee of Trinidad and Tobago.
Lendore's personal best over 400 meters was 44.36 seconds.
This makes Trinidad and Tobago the third fastest runner in sporting history, behind Machel Cedenio and Ian Morris.
