A former England rugby player, an "
", has been arrested on suspicion of raping a teenage girl, according to the PA news agency and the
. The tabloid reports that the player, whose name has not been released for legal reasons, was arrested on Sunday following an attack at a Manchester nightclub the day before. A 41-year-old woman was also arrested for administering a substance with the intention of causing a sexual assault.
Both have been released on bail while the investigation continues.
A police spokesperson, quoted by the
, said: “
Officers were called shortly before 11 a.m. on Sunday January 9 to report a sexual assault on a young woman.
Another tabloid, The
, reports that the alleged victim, who had planned to take a taxi home, would have agreed to be accompanied by the player.
He then allegedly brought her to a property where they would have spent the night.
The next morning at around 11 a.m., the owner of the house found the girl in a state of confusion and called the police.
The English Federation (Rugby Football Union) declined to comment.
