The Rod Laver Arena is home to the Australian Open.

But who does the stadium owe its name to?

And why did the surface cause a lot of explosive fuel for the players?

  • The Rod Laver Arena holds 14,820 spectators.

  • The stadium was named after an Australian tennis legend.

  • The topping was causing trouble.

Melbourne - The

Australian Open

marks the start of a new tennis season.

After all,

Melbourne

is looking for the first Grand Slam winner of the year.

If you want to crown yourself Down Under, you will inevitably end up in the

Rod Laver Arena

- the final and most venerable venue of the Happy Slam.

Many a tennis battle has already been fought there in front of the eyes of the spectators.

The tennis stadium has a total of

14,820 seats

, making it the

largest venue for the Australian Open

.

The facility is also one of the most historic places in the tennis world.

The tennis temple has been home to the tournament for several decades.

Australian Open: Stadium named after tennis legend Rod Laver

The Australian Open was held there for the first time in

January 1988

.

At that time the stadium was still called the "National Tennis Center at Flinders Park".

But the name is probably no longer a term for modern tennis fans.

The stadium was last renamed in 2003 - in memory of the Australian tennis player

Rod Laver

Whose historic career in Australia will probably never be completely forgotten.

As well as?

Because Laver won around 200 individual titles in his career - including eleven Grand Slam titles.

He was successful three times in his home country.

Thus, the tennis icon is a more than worthy name bearer.

Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne: tennis history is written on this surface

The game is played in Melbourne on

Plexicushion

, an acrylic-based flooring for hard tennis courts. But that wasn't always the case in the past. The new sub-floor was only laid in 2008. First there was a duel on Rebound Ace. However, the dampened tennis hard court surface caused controversial discussions among players.

Australian Open: did the surface increase the risk of injury?

According to the players, the course would become stickier with increasing temperatures, which would significantly increase the risk of injury.

Although research did not reveal any evidence of this, the players' request was ultimately given in.

Outside of the tennis tournament, the stars in the arena hold a knife in hand.

From pop stars to motor-cross riders to e-athletes, they have all entered the big stage of the

Rod Laver Arena

.

Many more will follow.

Alexander Zverev is currently in top form.

The German is one of the favorites of the Australian Open 2022. Meanwhile, almost everything in the tennis world revolves around Novak Djokovic.
