The Tölzer Löwen find their way into the game late at ESV Kaufbeuren and lose 2:3 after extra time.
Kaufbeuren/Bad Tölz – It was the expected close exchange of blows between two teams fighting to stay in the top ten of the DEL 2.
The Tölzer Löwen got a point on Friday evening but were beaten by ESV Kaufbeuren 2:3 in extra time.
Ruled by Kaufbeuren
After a somewhat cautious start, they were a little lucky in that they stayed in the game and even turned the party around. But Kevin Gaudet's team was also a bit unlucky in that they only took one point despite a balanced game and good chances in the closing stages. Thomas Brandl hit the post in extra time in his first game after a week-long injury break. Tyler Spurgeon, best Kaufbeurer player that evening, made the decision a little later with a margin.
The lions got less out of the game, were too passive at first, had less forward action and fewer chances to score. Thomas Merl, also back in the lion pack after a long break, allowed himself to be inattentive when attacking himself, which led to a counterattack and a dangerous situation. But Jimmy Hertel in the Tölzer Tor had big plans. And Merl then showed some good offensive actions.
Nevertheless, Tölz wasn't really in the game, the deficit deserved.
Spurgeon put the ball back to Markus Schweiger, who threw the disc under the bar.
"We've been playing with three rows for a long time," says Gaudet.
"Maybe we thought, 'Now we're strong.'
We weren't.
Kaufbeuren was clearly the better team in the first third, very fast, reminds me a bit of Dresden, they dominated us.”
Spiro was freezing when Krauss lost his helmet
But the lions fought back. Were lucky when Kaufbeuren's Spurgeon and ex-Lion Joseph Lewis hit the crossbar and post three times. And Hertel's good saves. And then they got better, turned the match around. "It was an open game in the second period," says Gaudet. Top scorer Lubor Dibelka from Tölz equalized when Thomas Brandl put the puck on him. And Cam Spiro executed ice cold when ESV defender Johannes Krauss lost his helmet and was therefore unable to intervene in the action. Markus Eberhardt's pass landed unhindered at Spiro, who lobbed the disc under the crossbar while spinning. "You have to try to bring a 2-1 lead home in the last third," says Gaudet.
That didn't work because Kaufbeuren didn't want to have the butter taken off their bread again - as so often this year.
John Lammers equalized.
In the final phase it was back and forth, Spiro hit the crossbar again for Tölzer, but extra time had to make the decision.
Again, both teams had chances to win.
But Kaufbeuren got the two points.
"We have to be happy with a point away from home," says Löwen coach Gaudet.
