Andriy Shevchenko was dismissed this Saturday from the post of Genoa coach just over two months after his appointment, without having managed to win a single league match on the bench of the Ligurian club, penultimate in Serie A. Appointed on November 7, the 2004 Ballon d'Or, was "dismissed" two days after an elimination in the round of 16 of the Italian Cup against the club to which he owes his best years as a footballer, AC Milan (3-1), Genoa announced in a press release.

The former French player Abdoulay Konko will take over, assisted by Roberto Murgita, specifies Genoa, who is moving to Fiorentina on Monday for the 22nd day of Serie A. According to the Italian press, the successor of "Sheva" on the bench will be Bruno Labbadia, without a club since being ousted from Hertha Berlin a year ago.

The 55-year-old former German international has notably coached Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburg and Stuttgart.

Shevchenko, 45, had signed up until 2024 for his first experience on the bench of a club, after leading the Ukrainian selection for five years. Last summer, he notably led Ukraine in the quarter-finals of the last Euro, lost against England (4-0). The arrival of the former Ukrainian striker was part of a change of era desired by the new American owner of the club, the American fund 777 Partners.

Genoa is a historic Italian football club, born in 1893. It notably won the first Italian championship in 1898 and has nine titles in total, the last dating back nearly a century (1924).

The club had fallen back into Serie B in the 1990s. Bought and restructured by Italian entrepreneur Enrico Preziosi in 2003, it returned to the top flight in 2007, but has been playing mainly for maintenance in recent seasons.
