Arthur Rinderknech led a set and two points to nil in the decisive game of the 2nd set but he could not come any closer to his first title on the big circuit.

The French, 26 years old and 58th in the world, yielded this Saturday morning in the final of the ATP 250 tournament in Adelaide 2 against the Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis (145th in the world and beneficiary of an invitation), who won 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 after a 2h38 fight.

Rinderknech played his first final on the ATP circuit at the age of 26.

Despite the defeat, his career in Adelaide will allow him to return to the Top 50 of the next ATP ranking on Monday and become French No. 3.

Beaten by Gaël Monfils in the final of the Adelaide 1 tournament last week, Kokkinakis, at the age of 25, pocketed his first ATP title.

First round trap at the Australian Open

At the Australian Open which begins in Melbourne on Monday, Rinderknech will face young Alexei Popyrin (58th) in the first round.

Distrust, however, given the energy left this week in Adelaide.

Especially against an Australian opponent, always transcended in front of his audience.

From the American university stream

Rinderknech, son of a former pro player, Virginie Paquet, and a player ranked under 15, comes from the North American university stream. Once his bac S in his pocket, he spent four years at Texas A & M University and validated a business degree in the summer of 2018. After which, the young man had given himself two years to grow his talent on the circuit. The two years have passed but the results being conclusive, the student of Sébastien Villette, imbued with the culture of winning made in the USA, perseveres in the job. No doubt a next title opportunity will present itself before long.

To console themselves, the Habs can always take a look at Kokkinakis' career.

Plagued by repeated injuries, the Australian, in very clear recovery, lifted his first trophy on the circuit four and a half years after his last final, lost in Los Cabos, Mexico, in August 2017.
