The Indian Embassy in Damascus, in cooperation with the General Sports Federation, held the first friendly Kabaddi tournament in Tishreen Sports City in Damascus on the occasion of the celebrations of the National Day of Indian Youth and as part of India's celebrations of the seventy-fifth anniversary of its independence.

In a speech, the Indian Ambassador in Damascus Mahinder Singh Kanyal praised the bilateral relations between Syria and India, stressing his country's desire to contribute to the reconstruction in Syria.

The ambassador explained that kabaddi is one of the traditional sports in India, expressing his confidence that today it will open a new horizon for cooperation in the field of sports movement between the two friendly countries.

The head of the Sports for All Federation, Thanaa Muhammad, indicated in a statement to SANA that this friendly tournament is the first for this sport locally. Teams representing the governorates of Damascus, Damascus countryside, Homs and a team from India participated in it, and work will be done to spread it in the governorates to expand the base of its practitioners.

The head of the Kabaddi Game Committee, Muhammad Maher Qudsi, indicated that this sport, which depends on physical fitness, has recently entered Syria and is an inexpensive, popular team game, and the Sports for All Federation has provided it with all the necessary training courses to expand its spread in order to rehabilitate its cadres.

A number of players expressed their happiness to participate in the first Kabaddi tournament, as it is one of the popular sports that witness a great demand for its practice, expressing their willingness to develop their levels to participate in the tournaments that the Sports for All Federation seeks to establish later in preparation for foreign participation in the future.

The tournament was attended by the Secretary of the Damascus branch of the Arab Socialist Baath Party, Husam Al-Samman, member of the Executive Office of the General Sports Federation, Abdel Nasser Karko, and head of the Executive Committee of the General Sports Federation in Damascus, Muhannad Taha.

It is noteworthy that the Kabaddi sport is a game in which two teams compete between defense and attack to score the largest number of points by trying to catch the opponent’s team members or touch them while playing. The team consists of 12 players, seven in the field and five in reserve.
