All it took was a flash of genius from the Belgian striker to bring Manchester City considerably closer to the title.
Still, Kevin De Bruyne was far from having a great day.
Hesitating, the Mancunian captain should even have been warned for a gross foul on Hakim Ziyech in the 58th minute of play, a sign of his frustration.
But in the 70th minute, he showed all his talent on an individual feat, first resisting N'Golo Kanté, then wrapping a delicious shot from the right into the opposite side netting to deliver his team, dominating but well struggling to succeed in putting out of position the Blues defending intelligently.
Malang Sarr did not deserve
At 22, the former Nice player experienced the second tenure of his young career in the Premier League this Saturday.
The first was part of a trip to Brentford.
But on the ground of the leader Manchester City, in the meeting at the top of the 22nd day, the pressure was not the same.
And despite Thomas Tuchel's invective on the bench during the first period, Malang Sarr did quite well.
Defensively, especially, with several welcome interventions against a not easy to contain Raheem Sterling.
On the other hand, he will still have to work on his revival, which is too fragile under pressure.
FLOPS
Romelu Lukaku, symbol of a sad Chelsea attack
By establishing him for this shock, the German coach had visibly made an act of peace after the quarrel between the two men.
But Romelu Lukaku missed a great opportunity, too, to give Tuchel the confidence he had just given him.
Ghostly in a first period during which the Londoners will not have sketched the slightest shot in the direction of the opposing goal, the Belgian striker however had the best opportunity of his people in the 48th, when he came up against Ederson.
What will remain very little for him, and for the offensive sector of Chelsea.
In the discharge of the Red Devil, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic will have hardly helped him, nor Timo Werner entered for the last 20 minutes.
Kepa, far from comprehensive insurance
Edouard Mendy left to compete in the African Cup of Nations with Senegal, Kepa had the right to a second tenure this season in the league, after a London derby at Tottenham won masterfully on September 19 (0-3).
Even if the Spanish goalkeeper made a superb save against Jack Grealish at the end of the first period to prevent his team from joining the locker room behind, he was guilty of an unfortunate side step on De Bruyne's strike.
Not a big mistake, but a damaging little approximation.
What is more regrettable is the quality of his kicking game and his raises, which gave some shivers of excitement to the Mancunian public lodger.
