DHB coach Alfred Gislason meets the opposing coach in the hotel shortly before the start of the European Handball Championship against Belarus.

His reaction surprised.

Update from January 15, 2022:

After Germany's opening win against Belarus at the European Handball Championship, there was also good news from ARD.

Our first report from January 14, 2022:

Bratislava – The German national handball team has been preparing for the European Handball Championships in Hungary and Slovakia since this week.

On Friday evening, the DHB team starts the tournament with the uncomfortable opening hurdle Belarus.

A crazy scene took place in the hotel in Bratislava before the duel.

Germany's coach Alfred Gislason talks about a chat with the opposing coach at the breakfast table.

It's a rarity in itself for two opposing coaches to have a casual chat at the hotel buffet shortly before an important European Championship game.

Such a meeting would be unthinkable in football, a business worth millions.

But what is particularly surprising is the way the conversation was conducted - and the reaction of Belarus coach Yuri Shevtsov.

Both teams, Germany and Belarus, are accommodated in the same hotel.

No wonder people cross paths.

And so Gislason tried to talk to his fellow coach at breakfast.

"I would like the time you have with your team," Gislason

said to Shevtsov, according to

kicker .

His reaction is amazing: "He just laughed his head off and said: 'You won't get it anyway'".

Background: Gislason has been fighting in vain for a long time to be given more time with the national team during the year.

Handball EM: DHB coach Gislason warns of Belarus

Gislason and Shevtsov have known each other since childhood.

The Icelander has a lot in common with the Belarus coach, who coached TBV Lemgo, TUSEM Essen and Rhein-Neckar Löwen between 1996 and 2008.

The two first met as players at the 1979 Junior World Championships.

Gislason calls Shevtsov, who is only three months younger, an "outstanding guy - and coach anyway".

This is one of the reasons why Gislason does not take the Belarusians lightly.

Belarus should not be underestimated by anyone in the German camp, as the national coach, who sees a "very dangerous opponent", emphasized once again: "The first six play in Champions League teams." Gislason warned in particular of Brest's 26-year-old right winger Mikita Vailupau.
