Linoy Ashram Not Alone: The Blow of Thefts at the Wingate Institute | Israel today

Burglaries and thefts of computers, telephones and wallets • Israel Today received evidence of a broader phenomenon than the chain that disappeared for the Olympic gold medalist

Last week, after a special ceremony to unveil a figurine inspired by her, Olympic gold medalist Linoy Ashram revealed on her private Instagram account that a special net made especially for her was stolen from the personal bag at the Wingate Institute.

"Israel Today" has learned that Ashram is not alone in this story, and in recent years, in the training halls, facilities, the athletes' lodge, the dormitories, the open sports fields, the gyms and the lawns, there have been quite a few similar cases.

For example, in the athletics area, some athletes reported that their cell phones disappeared.

Others also reported burglary of dormitory apartments at the institute, from which valuable equipment was stolen: from a wallet, through a computer and headphones to a running watch.

The guys from judo did not miss the phenomenon either, and a few years ago some of the cellular athletes disappeared.

Unions operating within the institute fell victim to the phenomenon, including equipment that was rented or purchased for major competitions and had to be returned, but at the end of the event was required to pay because the same equipment had disappeared from the rooms of officials.

It is important to note that security cameras are scattered throughout the institute, which in the past helped crack a case of equipment that had disappeared to the swimming association.

In addition to the cameras, the institute's chief of staff patrols him during the day, but it does not seem to be enough.

Yuval Goma, a former Israeli triathlon champion, lived in a boarding school until three years ago and told "Israel Today": "I keep hearing stories. Even during a team training run, they stole a phone and broke into my apartment. They stole expensive equipment, and then the CBT came and took care of it. .

"When I heard Linoy's story I was amazed for her, but I was not so surprised, I knew it was happening. Today I coach athletes, and in the pool about a month ago, while training, they stole a phone and wallet for the team next to us. It's just crazy."

How easy is it to steal at Wingate?

"It does not take much to get into the old pool, it is not like country pools that need to be appointed. This is a phenomenon. Since then we have not left our phones unattended."

Triathlete Roy Zoarz came to train in the athletics track and put his personal equipment aside, but when he returned to training he discovered that the phone was not there: "In athletics there are no cameras, it is an open place where you go a lot. "I'd rather leave it in the car."

The Wingate Institute's response

"The Wingate Institute takes any incident of theft seriously, and handles any such case with the necessary seriousness. At the same time, we continuously address the issue by increasing security measures and keeping belongings.

"The institute is an open campus, which in addition to its sports activities includes Bahad 8 and the Zinman Academic College. Every day about 2,000 people and hundreds of vehicles enter the complex. Similar public.

"We appeal to anyone who encounters such an incident to contact the institute's staff so that we can deal with it in real time."
