Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has been voted World Player of the Year for the second time in a row.
The 33-year-old Pole beat Mohamed Salah from Liverpool FC and Lionel Messi from Paris Saint-Germain in the vote by the world association FIFA, who defeated Lewandowski in the awarding of the "Ballon d'Or" by the French sports newspaper L'Équipe had been able to prevail.
Last season, Lewandowski set a new Bundesliga record after 49 years by beating Gerd Müller's 49-year-old record of 41 goals in a season with 41 goals.
“Everything that happened last year, the Bundesliga record, I would never have dared to dream of.
If you had told me that a few years ago, I would not have believed it, "said Lewandowski, who was connected via video, after the award ceremony.
Putellas crowns outstanding season
The election of Alexia Putellas as the new world footballer was expected.
The FC Barcelona striker had already won the Ballon d'Or in 2021 and was named Uefa Player of the Year.
As a star player in the Blaugrana attack, Putellas celebrated the triple of Spanish championship, cup win and Champions League success last season.
Putellas follows last year's winner Lucy Bronze.
Also up for election were Putellas' team-mate Jennifer Hermoso and Chelsea's Sam Kerr.
Mendy honored as best keeper
Somewhat surprisingly, the choice of the best goalkeeper in the world did not fall on defending champion Manuel Neuer or Gianluigi Donnarumma, who, as the best player of the tournament, played a major role in the European championship title of the Italian national team.
Instead, Edouard Mendy prevailed: the Senegalese, who was only able to establish himself in professional football in 2016 at the age of 24, was one of the top performers on the defensive when Chelsea FC won the Champions League.
The Chilean Christiane Endler sat down for the women, and the German international Ann-Katrin Berger from Chelsea was also nominated.
