NFL Playoffs: Cowboys lose strange closing stages to 49ers

No team has ever had more penalties in the NFL playoffs than the Cowboys did against the 49ers. But that wasn't the only reason why they quarreled with the referees.

In a curious final phase, the San Francisco 49ers won the NFL playoffs at the Dallas Cowboys.

At 23:17 (16:7) on Monday night, after a wild game, the Cowboys were only separated from victory by a touchdown before the time ran out on the last play.

Quarterback Dak Prescott ran deep into the opposing half with just 14 seconds left and wanted to quickly throw the ball to the ground to stop time. The problem: one of the referees has to touch the ball before the next move. So the referee sprinted after the Cowboys offense, bumped into Prescott and placed the ball a little further back than the quarterback had done before. Too late: the game was over.

Cowboys coach Mike McCarty said he's never seen an umpire and quarterback collide like this in a game-winning situation.

"It's definitely hard to accept," Prescott said.

The cowboys can only blame the referees to a limited extent, the referee acted according to the rules.

Rather, after the game it was discussed whether the move was not too risky due to the lack of time.

It was the strange end of a strange traditional duel, because a lot had gone wrong for the cowboys before.

Blinded by the sun

They received a total of 14 penalties, and no team received more in a playoff game. The Cowboys gave away 89 yards, for comparison: 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo only threw for a total of 172 yards. In addition, the Cowboys had to struggle with their own stadium: In the second quarter, pass receiver Cedrick Wilson was so blinded by the sun, which shone through a window front of the hall construction, that he ducked away from a ball instead of catching it.

The second game on Monday night, which the Kansas City Chiefs won 42:21 (21:7) against the Pittsburgh Steelers, was less exciting.

Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes threw for five touchdowns and probably ended the career of his opposite number Ben Roethlisberger, who has not officially confirmed the end of his career but has been hinting for weeks: "Hopefully I left a legacy as it is, a To be Steeler,” said Roethlisberger.

The Chiefs now meet the Buffalo Bills, the 49ers have to go to the top favorite for the title: Green Bay Packers.
