After the disappointment in the Golden Ball award that went bizarrely to Leo Messi, Robert Lewandowski was tonight (Monday) selected as the FIFA Footballer of the Year for 2021.
The Bayern Munich striker said after the award for the second time in a row: "I feel great respect and I am very proud and happy. I want to thank my teammates, we all work hard to win titles. It is a title for everyone around me. Everything that happened last year, Bundesliga record, "I would not have dared to dream about him. If you had told me that a few years ago, I would not have believed. Unfortunately, Gerd is no longer with us. But I could not have done it without him."
European Champion of the Year manager Chelsea winner Thomas Tuchel won the award, and Blues goalkeeper Edward Mandy was named Goalkeeper of the Year.
