Jamaica will be represented at the Beijing Olympics (February 4-20) for the first time in its history in three bobsleigh events, the Jamaican Olympic Committee announced on Monday.

"

It will be fire on the ice

," said Team Jamaica on its Twitter account.

"

This is the first time that Jamaica has qualified in three Olympic bobsleigh events: the four-man, the two-man and the women's monobob

," added the Jamaican Olympic Committee.

Jamaica can also hope to participate in the fourth and final event on the 2022 Olympics program, since in the women's two-man bobsleigh, the Jamaican crew narrowly missed out on qualifying and have the status of first substitute. Jamaica made history at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada, by participating for the first time in the bobsleigh events, in the two-man (30th) and four-man (retired) events.

The country has since taken part in the bobsleigh events at the Olympics on several occasions, in men's and women's two-man bobsleigh, but we had to go back to 1998 to find traces of a Jamaican crew in the four-man bob, the premier category. The male quartet and their improbable dream of Olympic glory in Calgary then inspired the film “

Rasta Rockett

” and met with great popular success.

A member of this crew, Chris Stokes is now president of the Jamaican Bobsleigh Federation and faces a challenge of a different nature: that of succeeding in financing new equipment, in particular very expensive bobsleighs or sleds. The Jamaican Olympic Committee has been trying since the end of November to raise 194,000 dollars (170,200 euros) for this via an online financing operation. But so far, she's only raised $4,000.

Our athletes are as strong-willed, hard-working, resilient and talented as others, but without high-level bobsled, they will never be able to reach their potential

,” reads the fundraising page.

"

We don't want to drag race in a Prius

," the call concludes.
