Robert Lewandowski remains world footballer of the year in 2021 - even though his closest competitor Lionel Messi tried everything.
Munich / Zurich – Robert Lewandowski* is World Footballer of the Year 2021, this has been clear since Monday evening – and ultimately it wasn't a big surprise.
The FC Bayern attacker prevailed against Lionel Messi (Paris Saint Germain) and Mohamed Salah from Liverpool FC in the FIFA elections, in which the national coaches and captains as well as selected journalists and fans were allowed to vote.
It was this Messi who snatched the Ballon d'Or from Lewy last November, which amazed many experts.
Now the Argentine has apparently tried everything to snag the next individual trophy as well.
Because in the FIFA vote for the world footballer, Lewandowski didn't get a single vote from Messi!
The 34-year-old opted for his PSG teammates Kylian Mbappe and Neymar instead.

After all, Lewandowski was able to rely on the support of national coach Hansi Flick and DFB and FCB captain Manuel Neuer.
Flick votes for Lewy, Mo Salah and Mbappe.
Teammate Neuer also voted for Salah, but put N'Golo Kanté (Chelsea FC) in third place.
Lewy, quite the fair sportsman, voted for Messi on two, behind Jorginho (Chelsea FC) and in front of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese gave his vote to Lewandowski - while of course there was none left for eternal competitor Messi...

Lewandowski is thus honored as world footballer for the second time in a row.
"Both moments are incredibly good," said the 33-year-old at the FIFA gala in the evening.
There were almost effusive reactions from his home country of Poland.
For Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Lewandowski's re-election as world footballer is obviously a matter of course - despite attempts by competitor Messi to prevent it.
“Probably no one thought for a second that it could turn out differently.
Because in Poland, Robert is someone special.
He is the greatest footballer in the history of our country," wrote the Prime Minister on Facebook.
