National coach Alfred Gislason reacted immediately to the Corona outbreak among German handball players and nominated five players for the European Championship.
Goalkeeper veteran Johannes Bitter, left winger Rune Dahmke, pivot Sebastian Firnhaber and backcourt players Paul Drux and Fabian Wiede should join the team in Bratislava this Tuesday, as the German Handball Federation (DHB) announced on Monday evening.
It is still unclear whether they can take part in the final preliminary round match against Poland on Tuesday evening (6 p.m. ZDF).
All five must take a PCR test immediately upon arrival in Slovakia, the negative result of which must be available by kick-off.
On Monday evening, five other national players had tested positive for Corona. Goalkeeper Andreas Wolff, the backcourt players Kai Häfner and Luca Witzke as well as the outside Timo Kastening and Lukas Mertens are missing from the DHB selection for the time being at the tournament in Slovakia and Hungary.
The German team now has a total of seven corona cases in its own ranks. Backcourt player Julius Kühn had already tested positive on Saturday, followed by Hendrik Wagner, who was subsequently nominated for him.
All players were immediately isolated and must remain in quarantine for at least five days according to tournament rules. Only then could they freely test themselves with two negative PCR tests on two consecutive days.
