The legendary Streif is on the program at the weekend.

Before the prestigious race in Kitzbühel, however, there is bad news from Josef Ferstl.

Kitzbühel - shock for the German ski racers: Josef Ferstl was transported away by helicopter after a fall during the first downhill training session on the Streif in Kitzbühel.

According to information from the German Ski Association (DSV), he suffered a cut on his nose, according to information from the mountain rescue service, further investigations are ongoing.

"When the helicopter comes, it's never a good sign," said teammate Dominik Schwaiger at the finish.


Ferstl, who had won a Super-G on the Streif in 2019, got too close to the safety tarpaulin at the exit of the steep slope and fell.

However, he was then able to climb into the rescue sled on his own.

Apart from that, the subsequent removal from the mountain is obligatory in Kitzbühel, Ferstl was flown to the hospital in St. Johann for the examinations.


Otherwise there were no other falls during the first training session on Wednesday.

The fastest was the Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde ahead of the Italian Matteo Marsaglia and Matthias Mayer from Austria.

DSV racer Romed Baumann underlined his ambitions with sixth place.


In addition, Schwaiger came in tenth, Simon Jocher was 20th, Vice World Champion Andreas Sander, who is looking for his form, finished in 28th place.

The German downhillers had recently disappointed at the classic in Wengen am Lauberhorn.
