Kitzbühel – It is the big highlight of every winter: the Streif!

Next weekend it's that time again, the most spectacular races of the year are coming up.

The winter sports fans are already very excited.

Josef Ferstl was taken away by helicopter after a fall during his first downhill training session on the Streif.

"When the helicopter comes, it's never a good sign," said teammate Dominik Schwaiger at the finish.

Ferstl, who had won a Super-G on the Streif in 2019, got too close to the safety tarpaulin at the exit of the steep slope and fell.

However, he was then able to climb into the rescue sled on his own.

Apart from that, the subsequent removal from the mountain is obligatory in Kitzbühel, Ferstl was flown to the hospital in St. Johann for the examinations.

Fortunately, the all-clear was quickly given during the course of Wednesday afternoon.

Ferstl reported from the hospital.

In a DSV announcement, the 33-year-old was quoted as follows: "I'm glad that the fall went smoothly.

Although I currently feel like I've had a full wash - the muscles are tight, the bruises are undeniable - but I'll visit our physiotherapist first and let him get me back in shape."

On Thursday you will then see "whether I'm fit for training," continued "Pepi" Ferstl.

No structural damage was diagnosed, said DSV team doctor Michael Koller.

"Josef suffered painful bruises and an abrasion on his nose, but did not suffer any serious injuries."

There were no other falls during training on the legendary Streif on Wednesday.

The fastest was the Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, the best German was Romed Baumann in sixth.

In addition, Schwaiger came in tenth, Simon Jocher was 20th, Vice World Champion Andreas Sander, who is looking for his form, finished in 28th place.

Another downhill training session is scheduled for Thursday.

The two races take place on Friday and Saturday.
