The German handball players lost their first main round game at the European Championship.
The team of national coach Alfred Gíslason lost to defending champion Spain 23:29 (12:14) and suffered their first defeat in the fourth tournament game.
The best German throwers in front of 1683 spectators in the Ondreja Nepelu Arena in Bratislava were captain Johannes Golla and Patrick Zieker with four goals each.
The German attackers repeatedly despaired of the outstanding Spanish goalkeeper Gonzalo Pérez de Vargas, who made 16 saves, some of them outstanding.
The next opponent of the DHB selection, which was hit by eleven corona cases, is Norway on Friday (8.30 p.m. / ZDF).
Other opponents are Vice World Champion Sweden on Sunday (6 p.m. / ARD) and Russia on Tuesday (6 p.m. / ZDF).
The top two teams in the group of six advance to the semi-finals in Budapest.
Germany has 2:2 points on the account.
