In his heyday he was one of the best footballers in the world.

Now his unprecedented crash is perfect: Robinho has to go to prison for nine years.

Rome - The verdict is final!

Former Brazilian soccer star Robinho has been jailed for nine years.

He was found guilty of rape and the Supreme Court of Cassation declined a final appeal against the verdict.

In 2013, the 37-year-old was involved in a gang rape of a young woman in Milan.

In 2017 he was found guilty of the crime.

Even then, the Brazilian did not appear, and he was not present when the guilty verdict was finally passed.

Robinho has to go to prison - but Brazil doesn't have to extradite him

Italy is now likely to request Robinho's extradition to Italy.

But there is a problem: the Brazilian constitution prohibits the extradition of Brazilians.

So if Robinho stays in his home country - which can be assumed - it is actually almost impossible to arrest him.

A judicial cooperation treaty between Brazil and Italy does not provide that a conviction handed down by the Italian judiciary can be enforced on Brazilian territory.

Should the Italian state issue an international arrest warrant, Robinho and his friend Ricardo Falco, who has also been convicted, could be arrested while traveling abroad.

But not in Brazil.

Ex-footballer Robinho convicted of rape

"Brazil is a great country and I hope it knows how to deal with the situation," the victim's lawyer said, calling for extradition.

However, it is unclear how the state will react.

Robinho (real name Robson de Souza) played for AC Milan*, Real Madrid* and Manchester City* in his career.

He won the championship in Italy, Spain and Brazil with FC Santos.

He made 100 appearances for the national team and won the 2007 Copa America.

FC Santos signed him in 2020, but under enormous pressure from sponsors and fans, his contract was suspended after just one week and then terminated.
