The DHB team is plagued by a corona wave at the European Handball Championship.
A number of players are positive, a number of players have already been nominated.
An overview.
Bratislava – The handball championship 2022 in Hungary and Slovakia is slowly entering the decisive phase. Meanwhile, things are going dramatically for the German national team before the first main round game against Spain on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. A corona wave is flooding the DHB team, which had previously completed the preliminary round of the tournament as group winners with victories against Belarus, Poland and Austria. The DHB therefore even asked the European handball association on Wednesday evening how a possible withdrawal from the European Championship would be assessed and at the same time applied for the Spain game to be relocated. However, the latter was rejected.
Before the main round against Spain, Norway, Sweden and Russia, coach Alfred Gislason's team had already recorded twelve positive corona test results in the ranks of the players.
Several nominations followed.
It all started with the infection of Julius Kühn - in the meantime it has even caught an actor who was actually planned to move up.

Update shortly before the Spain game: Lightning comeback for Christoph Steinert - the best German tournament scorer so far is allowed to appear at the start of the main round of the German handball team against Spain on Thursday evening (6 p.m. / ARD) despite his positive corona finding on Wednesday. This said the German Handball Federation (DHB) shortly before kick-off in Bratislava: "The 32-year-old left-hander received a weakly positive result in an additional PCR test ordered by the German Handball Federation on Wednesday. All tests carried out beforehand and afterwards were negative , so that the status 'negative' was also confirmed when asked by the laboratory management, where the only positive test was evaluated," says a statement from the association.)
Another staff member is said to have tested positive.
It remains to be seen whether this number of infections will remain.
After all, players will continue to be tested daily.
Incidentally, this also applies to the players who have arrived, who are now moving up so that the DHB team can still get a playable squad at the start.
All in all, professionals have now joined the team afterwards - all from the local national handball leagues.
It was particularly bitter for the subsequently nominated Hendrik Wagner, who tested positive immediately and was not even allowed to play for the DHB (see list above).
