Werder Bremen won a crazy game in Paderborn - despite a goal from 45 meters and thanks to their own dream goals. Darmstadt pushed past FC St. Pauli to the top of the table.

In Paderborn, Werder Bremen won a memorable second division game with a number of dream goals after being 3-1 down.

Bremen thus collected three important points in the promotion race – as did SV Darmstadt, who are the new championship leaders thanks to a win in Ingolstadt.

The game started with excitement: A contact between Ömer Toprak and Sven Michel was enough for referee Tobias Welz to give Paderborn a penalty.

Michel adjusted the ball, failed with his shot by Jiri Pavlenka (13th minute) - and didn't have to be upset: Because a Bremen defender started into the penalty area too early, the penalty was repeated.

This time Florent Muslija was allowed to try and scored (15th).

Bremen then quarreled even more with the team of referees after Marvin Ducksch's supposed equalizer didn't count (22').

A right decision: Niclas Füllkrug was previously offside.

On the other side, Felix Platte, who scored twice in Paderborn's 4-1 win in the first leg, headed the ball against the post (23').

Ducksch's next attempt then conformed to the rules: the Bremen striker drew two defenders with a dribble. Instead of flicking into the far corner, Ducksch surprised with a shot into the near corner and equalized (35). It only took three minutes for Paderborn to lead again: Pavlenka was able to parry against Michel, but the Bremen keeper couldn't get close to Muslija's soulful shot into the far corner.

The second half offered no respite either.

Platte tried an artful shot into the corner from 45 meters – and was successful because he hit the ball perfectly and Pavlenka misjudged (56').

This time it was Bremen who answered directly: Romano Schmid brought Werder back on with a full volley from almost 20 meters (59').

Then double goal scorer Muslija made a bad pass, Niclas Füllkrug started a solo run and shot into the far corner to equalize (66th).

Toprak makes the decision

The spectacle wasn't over yet: Platte (68') and Ducksch (73') each scored a dream goal from distance, but both goals didn't count.

The Paderborn's goal was preceded by a foul on Toprak, Ducksch's goal was an offside position by Füllkrug.

In the final phase Ducksch failed on the post (82nd), Paderborn twice on the outstandingly reactive Pavlenka (84th) - and then it was Toprak, who used a mistake by Paderborn keeper Jannik Huth after a corner to turn the ball around with his hip push over the line.

Ole Werner celebrated his fifth win in his fifth game as Werder coach.

The Bremen climb to the relegation rank three, Paderborn is ninth.

SV Darmstadt 98 has taken the lead in the 2nd Bundesliga.

The Hessians came to a 2-0 (1-0) win at bottom FC Ingolstadt on Saturday and are now two points ahead of FC St. Pauli after the 20th matchday.

The Hamburg team had lost the city duel at HSV 1:2 the night before.

The Darmstadt team were completely superior to the overwhelmed climber and could have won even higher.

Tim Skarke had given Thorsten Lieberknecht's team the lead with a volley worth seeing (15'), Aaron Seydel made the decision late (82').
