The War on Home: Ashley Barty Wants to Excite Australia | Israel today

The world number one, Ashley Barty, wants to be the first Australian to win the local Grand Slam in 44 years • Tomorrow (10:00) awaits her surprising Amanda Anisimova in the quarterfinals

There is nothing a home crowd desires more than to see in front of it a local sporting success.

In tennis it is sometimes even more complex, as there is not always a player who comes to the competition on his soil when he is in a position to go all the way.

But the Australian Open has this privilege, and is called Ashley Barty.

The world number one conquered the summit for the first time on June 24, 2019. After about a month and a half, it dropped to second place and returned to the top again on September 9 of that year, manning it to this day, almost two and a half years since.

Now that she has long had to prove her status at the top of the world, Barty is faced with a goal no less prestigious than anything she has achieved so far - to lift a Grand Slam title on her home soil.

She opened the current tournament with a storm.

In the first three rounds she met rivals who did not really constitute an obstacle to the first ranked in the world, ran each of them in two light sets and in total parted ways from only eight games compared to 36 she took.

Tomorrow (10:00) the Australian will meet in the quarterfinals Amanda Anisimova, the American who ousted 2021 champion Naomi Osaka in the previous round.

Now that the spicy and difficult encounter is not on its way to the title, the world number one must run forward to the end, to achieve two things: the third Grand Slam in her career, and the first in Australia.

The Australian crowd is crying out for a local champion in the first Grand Slam of the year.

The last time this happened was somewhere in 1978, when Chris O'Neill did it.

The last to lift the title in men was Mark Edmundson, who had reached the great achievement two years earlier.

By the way, beyond the success in front of the local fans, it was also the only Grand Slam title of the two in his career.

Barty has already achieved two, at the last Wimbledon and as mentioned in France 2019, but there is no doubt that she, and with it the whole continent of Australia, are pinning hopes on winning the world number one, which on paper should go all the way this time.

"Barty's winning the title this year could take her to another level," said Australian former legend Rod Lieber, who himself attended the first Grand Slam title she won, at Roland Garros 2019. "It would be great for me if she won the Australian Championship," he added.
