Olympia: Germany relies again on flag bearer duo

The Winter Olympics are approaching.

Who carries the German flag at the opening ceremony?

There are three male and three male athletes to choose from.

Berlin - These are the most exciting weeks of this winter sports year: the prestigious ski races in Kitzbühel have just started, the biathletes were active in Antholz, the ski jumpers flew in Titisee-Neustadt.

And of course the big highlight follows: the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Even if the event has been accompanied by a number of background noises for months, the fascination with the Olympics is becoming more and more tangible these days.

After all, the official starting signal will be given on February 4th.

So the countdown is on.

While some athletes are still trembling for their ticket and Corona is an ever-present danger, the organizers are already looking forward to the opening ceremony in Beijing.

This naturally raises the question: Who are the standard-bearers?

Flag-bearer at the Olympic Winter Games: Germany relies on duo again

From a German point of view, Claudia Pechstein is one of the candidates who could take on this honorable task.

The five-time Olympic speed skating champion is up for election when deciding on the German flag-bearer duo for the Winter Games in Beijing (February 4 to 20).

The Berliner is one of a total of six athletes who can hope for the award.

In addition to Pechstein, who is taking part in her eighth Winter Games, the women's tobogganist Natalie Geisenberger and snowboarder Ramona Hofmeister were nominated.

The men's candidates are bobsleigh dominator Francesco Friedrich, ice hockey player Moritz Müller and tobogganist Tobias Wendl.

A duo at the flag bearers?

You already know that from the German team: A woman and a man had already been selected to lead the delegation at the summer games in Tokyo.

Back then, in July 2021, beach volleyball player Laura Ludwig and water jumper Patrick Hausding carried the German flag at the opening ceremony.

Beijing is now acting according to this model: a woman and a man are to be selected.

The votes of the German athletes and the fans are each rated at 50 percent.

You can vote until January 30 (11:59 p.m. CET) at www.teamdeutschland.de.

The result will be announced on February 3 (06:00 CET), one day before the opening ceremony.

According to the DOSB, criteria for the pre-selection were success, role model function and diversity of the sport.

In addition, “the Corona rules on site would have an impact on the arrival and departure of the athletes and thus also on the pre-selection”.
