The Russian Daniil Medvedev, ranked second in the world, reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, by defeating the American Maxim Cressi.
Medvedev surpassed his American opponent in a time of 3 hours and 30 minutes, 6-2, 7-6 4-7, 6-7 7-4, 7-5.
In the event of his coronation in Melbourne, Medvedev will become the first player since 1968 to win his first two major titles in a row, after winning the last Flushing Meadows title.
Medvedev will meet Canadian Felix (Oger) Aliasim, the ninth in the world, in the quarter-finals, after he beat veteran Croatian Marin Cilic 2-6, 7-6 7-9, 6-2, 7-6 4-7 in 3 hours and 35 minutes.
