The German squad for the ice hockey tournament at the Olympics has been announced.

National coach Toni Söderholm relies on a well-rehearsed team.

Munich - The team is standing!

Germany's ice hockey team is traveling to the Winter Olympics in Beijing with ten silver medalists from 2018.

National coach Toni Söderholm also presented two big surprises when the squad was officially announced on Tuesday: The re-nomination of the 2018 Olympic keeper, Danny aus den Birken (36), and that of storm veteran Daniel Pietta (35) was not to be calculate.

Olympics in Beijing: Surprisingly from the birches and Pietta in the ice hockey squad

After a rather weak season at EHC Red Bull Munich, Aus den Birken should only fly as number three this year behind Mathias Niederberger from Eisbären Berlin and Felix Brückmann from Adler Mannheim.

The silver winner from Pyeongchang had recently lost his regular place in Munich and had never been nominated by Söderholm since the end of 2018.

Pietta from ERC Ingolstadt, on the other hand, does: The native of Krefeld was also outside of important tournaments under Söderholm and most recently took part in a world championship in 2018 under the then national coach Marco Sturm.

Pietta has never been to the Olympics.

The Olympic team is led by captain Moritz Müller from the Kölner Haie.

The 35-year-old was also part of the silver team four years ago and is one of three candidates this year to be the German flag bearer at the opening ceremony on February 4th.

The ice hockey tournament in Beijing starts on February 9th, Germany starts a day later against co-favorite Canada.

A German winter sports legend can hardly believe his participation in the Olympic Games.
