DHB President Andreas Michelmann made it clear that withdrawing the German team from the final round of the European Handball Championship was not an option, despite the numerous corona cases in the team. In the short term, the association would have had recourse claims in the tens of millions, he told the online portal Sportbuzzer. "Clearly: we would have been broke as DHB," said Michelmann. In addition, the team has always communicated that they want to play the tournament to the end. "She would have been deprived of this chance," said Michelmann.
At the tournament in Hungary and Slovakia, a total of 15 German players were infected, along with other members of the delegation.
Finally, the President himself: Michelmann tested positive for the corona virus after returning from the European Championship.
"I am doing well so far.
Cough, runny nose – a bit of everything, but nothing dramatic.
I'm boosted too," said the 62-year-old.
However, Michelmann ruled out a return to the European Championship for the final weekend in Budapest, where the DHB wants to present its plans for the home European Championship in 2024 on Saturday.
The DHB team will play its last main round game against Russia in the evening (6 p.m.).
However, the team no longer has a chance of reaching the semi-finals.
