Sports cardiologist: heart is a frequent topic due to contamination

In the debate about heart muscle inflammation after a corona infection, football professionals should usually pause for several months.
Munich – “If myocarditis is temporally related to an acute corona infection, the professional societies and sports associations recommend that you take a break of at least three months.
Each case must always be considered individually," said Munich sports doctor and sports cardiologist Florian Straube of the German Press Agency.
The length of the break depends on the course of the disease.
"If the doctor diagnoses myocarditis on day X, then you don't know at that point how the disease will progress.
In the case of simple asymptomatic courses, you can perhaps deviate from these three months and start again with light training after just one or two months,” explained Straube, who advises the German Ice Hockey Federation, among other things.
"It is always important to gradually start again after a sports break."
The Alphonso Davies case recently attracted attention.
In mid-January, FC Bayern Munich's full-back showed signs of mild myocarditis after a corona infection.
However, it was not possible to determine exactly whether the disease was a consequence of the corona virus.

"The heart has been an issue more frequently in recent weeks, including among young athletes, because we now have a higher rate of infection with the corona virus and a high rate of new infections.
It was only because of this and the fact that young people are now more frequently infected that myocarditis became an issue," explained Straube.
"Because the incidence of myocarditis, i.e. the fact that heart muscle inflammation occurs as a result of a corona infection within 28 days after infection, is generally around 40 to a million.
