Greek top player Stefanos Tsitsipas is in the semi-finals of the Australian Open for the third time after an impressive performance.
The fourth in the world rankings surprisingly won 6: 3, 6: 4, 6: 2 against the 20-year-old Italian Jannik Sinner and will face top favorite Daniil Medvedev from Russia or Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the fight for the final on Friday.
“I tried to focus on my best shots.
That paid off better than I thought," said Tsitsipas, who was still struggling with elbow problems at the beginning of the year, after his victory in 2:06 hours: "Consistency is the key.
Even if I'm in the semi-finals now - that's just the beginning.«
Defeat in 2021 against Medvedev
Tsitsipas had already reached the semifinals in Melbourne in 2019 (against Rafael Nadal) and last year (against Medvedev), but lost both times.
The 23-year-old achieved his best Grand Slam result to date last season when he lost to Novak Djokovic in the final of the French Open despite a 2-0 set lead.
In the quarterfinals against world number ten Sinner, Tsitsipas put in a focused performance from start to finish.
The Greek was the more powerful player, serving strong and cold as ice with his break chances, all four of which he took.
Even a break in the second set, when the roof of the Rod Laver Arena had to be closed due to rain, didn't shake him.
Semi-finals Nadal vs. Berrettini
Overall, Tsitsipas is in the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the fifth time.
The Spaniard Rafael Nadal and Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini from Italy will play the second place in the final in Melbourne on Friday.
