CSU politician Stephan Mayer is resigning from his position as Vice President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation with immediate effect.

The 49-year-old informed the DOSB presidium of his decision on Tuesday, the umbrella organization announced on Wednesday.

Mayer was elected Vice President by the DOSB general meeting on December 4, 2021.

The former Parliamentary State Secretary was prohibited from exercising his honorary post for a period of twelve months after he had left the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

He is the sports policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU in the Bundestag.

DER SPIEGEL had reported on Mayer's possible conflict of interest in his conflict-ridden dual role.

The DOSB announced that the Presidium would deal with the consequences at its next regular meeting in March.

»I agree with Stephan Mayer, whom I would like to take this opportunity to thank once again for his willingness to do voluntary work in the DOSB, that we can continue to work together well and constructively in the new constellation for the benefit of sport in Germany be maintained, "said DOSB President Thomas Weikert.

Bureau thinned out

The committee around the longtime table tennis official Weikert currently only has three vice presidents: Verena Bentele, Kerstin Holze, Miriam Welte and Oliver Stegemann.

Like Weikert, they were newly elected to the presidency in December in Weimar.

Mayer was also initially a candidate for the highest office in German sport, but he withdrew his application a few weeks before the election.
